Unerase

Unerase is the process of recovering deleted files.

File deletion doesn't cause a change of a filesystem but results in changes in the filesystem records describing the files. So file deletion differs from disk format where you can change either the filesystem type or parameters of the existing filesystem. Therefore algorithms of data recovery after deletion and format differ.

Because unerase is simpler than unformat, it has been studied well, especially for FAT and NTFS because these filesystems are the most widespread. All the above leads to that there are a lot of either free or paid tools which are capable to unerase data. So we decided to test the most known of them. However, first we need to set the criteria to compare the efficiency of the unerase tools.
